Organizational Context

The incumbent will besupervised by the Communication / PI Officer. S/he will have frequent contactsinvolving the exchange of a wide range of information with colleagues withinUNHCR as well as media, international organizations, academic institutions andprivate individuals. The incumbent will be responsible for developingrelationships with local media and strengthening dialogue with journalists.S/he will have proven experience in working closely with media counterparts.S/he will be responsible for preparing briefing notes / press releases, withdemonstrable written skills in both English and Bengali. S/he will support theCommunication / PI officer in the preparation of web-stories. S/he will haveexperience in taking photographs / video and possess editing skills. S/he willbe capable of multi-tasking and working to tight deadlines, in a fast-pacedenvironment and as part of a team. As the incumbent will be working closelywith refugees, knowledge of the Rohingya language would be considered an asset.A clear understanding of the Rohingya crisis is essential, while previousexperience working with UN/NGOs on this situation would be considered an asset.

-      Media and local situation regarding UNHCR's work is regularly monitored.


Responsibility (process and functions undertaken to achieveresults)


-      Follow-upon Administrative and Logistical arrangements to organise press briefings andother events,

       such asworkshop and conferences.

-      Contributeto the production of information material for public awareness campaigns andfor the

       preparationof in-house bulletins, newsletters and information kits by contributing toarticles, reports and

       otherinformation gathered from various sources; liaise with printers concerning brochuresand

       publicationspublished by the office.

-      Draftroutine correspondence and texts for the office's website and maintaininformation databases.

-      Compileand distribute a daily news clipping service.

-      Distributepress statements and similar information to media, to other offices locally aswell as to


-      Maintainup-to-date filing system and appointments diary.

-      Performother duties as required.


Authority (decisions made in executing responsibilitiesand to achieve results)


-      Respond to non-complex media queries and incomingcorrespondence.

-      Have access to UNHCR Communication / PI systems.

Desirable Qualifications & Competencies:


-        Completion of UNHCR learning programmes or specific training relevant to functions of position.

-        Knowledge of another UN language is an asset.

Minumum Qulification and Professional Experience Required

Essential Minimum Qualification and Professional Experience:


-       Completionof the Secondary Education with post-secondary training in InternationalRelations, Journalism, Political Science or related field.

-       Minimum5 years of previous relevant job experience.

-       Communicationand computer skills.

-       Excellentdrafting skills as well as translation and interpreting skills.

-       Fluencyin English and working knowledge of another relevant UN language or locallanguage. (In offices where the working language is not English, excellentknowledge of UN working language of duty station and working knowledge ofEnglish.)
