Organizational Context

The External Relations Associate is normally supervisedby the External Relations Officer or another professional staff depending onthe staffing structure of the Office. The incumbent receives regular guidanceand advice from the supervisor. Advice and operational support may also bereceived from other senior staff and support units at the CountryOffice/HQ. 

External contacts are generally with a broad rangeof officials from national and international institutions, media or generalpublic involving the exchange of a wide range of information.

All UNHCR staff members are accountable to performtheir duties as reflected in their job description. They do so within theirdelegated authorities, in line with the regulatory framework of UNHCR whichincludes the UN Charter, UN Staff Regulations and Rules, UNHCR Policies andAdministrative Instructions as well as relevant accountability frameworks. Inaddition, staff members are required to discharge their responsibilities in amanner consistent with the core, functional, cross-functional and managerialcompetencies and UNHCR’s core values of professionalism, integrity and respectfor diversity.



-       Provide background briefings tolocal and international media. 

-       Keep track of evolving issuesconcerning persons of concern to be able to suggest stories and topics for themedia to cover.

-      Provide daily briefings onlocal developments to the Head of Office and ensure that briefing materialsfrom other offices are available.

-       Accompany visits of foreigndelegations and the media to refugee sites in the region, giving appropriatebriefings, commentaries and prepare briefing material for visitors.

-    Establish contacts with localorganisations to promote general interest and understanding of refugee issues

-     Ensure that the office is keptinformed of local developments which may have a political or operational impacton the office's activities.

-     May be required to compileinformation and SitReps received from the Field Offices and/or sections withinthe Office and consolidate into weekly/monthly/quarterly report.

-       Advise the Head of Office oflocal aspects of external relations policies.

-       Liaise with external partnersand local organizations on behalf of UNHCR.

-       Produce reports and briefingsfor internal and external partners.

-       Support the planning andcoordination of visits of external stakeholders to Cox’s Bazar.

-       Support the procurement anddistribution of UNHCR visibility items for staff.

-      Monitor the use of the UNHCRbranding (incl. the logo) and provide guidance where needed.

-     Compile and review narrativeinputs for reports and other information products from across the operation.

-      Support the donor relations andcommunication teams, and other units where needed.

-       Perform other related dutiesas required.

Minumum Qulification and Professional Experience Required

Essential Minimum Qualifications and Experience:
 Years ofExperience / Degree Level: For G6 - 3 yearsrelevant experience with High School Diploma; or 2 years relevant workexperience with Bachelor or equivalent or higher. 

-         Experience inlogistics, planning and/or events organization required.

-         Skills in drafting,editing and graphic design will be an asset but not essential.

Certificates and/orLicenses: Political Sciences; Social Sciences; InternationalRelations; Journalism; Communication

- Knowledge of Englishand UN working language of the duty station if not English and local language
